I can't find anyone at school who has read O'Brian, though three people I asked saw the movie. The thing that amazes me about Aubrey-Maturin is how consistently excellent it is. In twenty volumes written in thirty years, it never Jumps the Shark. Some books are less engaging to individuals than others, but that usually depends on the volume's plot and its amounts of fighting, spying, and domestic bits.

People tend to say "Wow" when I say it took me two and a half years to read the series. It was partly circumstance - I started at 14, and I had to go to the big library two towns over, so during the school year I could only go on Saturday when Mom had gas/gas money. Then sometimes the one I wanted was checked out. But it was partly choice. Sitting in the car with the book on my lap, internally squeeing with anticipation at spending time with Jack, Stephen, and the Surprises. It was like visiting old friends. Rushing through them in months wouldn't have been as much fun.

I love the fandom. Everyone is so gleeful about the canon. There's a divide between slash and gen fans, but they get on wonderfully.

I really need to read that biography of PO'B.
