Spoilers under the cuts. Boston Jacky. Jaimy Fletcher, you are now on notice. And it's annoying that the narrative won't let Jacky and Jaimy actually talk to each other. And didn't he already forgive her various dalliances in My Bonny Light Horseman, or whichever book it was? (They tend to run together in my head.)
Other than that, I liked it - I've always enjoyed the Boston setting. I liked having Clarissa aboard ship, and what she said about envying Jacky her freedom. Amy the suffragette was great, although it feels a little early for that. But if I cared very much about the history, I wouldn't have read to book 11.
(I've never done multiple cut tags on Dreamwidth - no, wait, I did for the May Alcott post. Okay, let's hope I remember how to do them right.)
Republic of Thieves! It was better than Red Seas Under Red Skies, and Sabetha was great. There were two things I think would have been nice. One, none of the flashbacks, that I remember, were from Sabetha's point of view. Nothing about her joining the Temple of Perelandro or getting to know Calo or Galdo or Jean or Nazca. "Orphan's Moon" could have been narrated by her, and then we would know exactly how disappointed she was at not being chosen for the Priesthood - a little? A lot? Shed a few tears the next night? Jean had "Up the River" and "The Lady of the Long Silence." Why not have a chapter about her learning dancing or law-scribing or that time she was a scullery maid? She could have talked to Chains about the outcome of "The Boy Who Chased Red Dresses."
Two, Patience was an interesting antagonist, more so than the Falconer. (Is it weird that after reading Lies three times, I still get him and the Grey King mixed up?) I think she ought to have lived. The sequence doesn't exactly need any more dead women.
Good scenes
The appearance of Regal
Locke entering that coffeehouse and getting right to work. It felt like the Gentlemen Bastards were back.
JEAN AND SABETHA CALLING OTHER EACH BROTHER AND SISTER. And "putting madam back on her pedestal."
That freaking epilogue!
Sabetha reminding Locke to toast Calo and Galdo, as a callback to them reminding Locke to toast her
Locke and Jean waking up on Sabetha's ship, and the way they escaped
"Did you ever consider how much Chains fucked us up?" and Locke's reaction
That she wasn't chaste for five years
That their mutual deflowering was just okay (I imagine that on the ride home Calo and Galdo schooled Locke on the clitoris and female orgasms)
Fic I want
Whatever Chains made Calo and Galdo do for their loyalty test
Sabetha returning to Camorr and trying to figure out WTF happened to them (IMO she's been a bit lonely and I don't know if Locke or Jean realize it)
Sabetha and Nazca!
Modern AU where Chains has a marching band instead of a gang because Sabetha twirling batons gives me cognitive dissonance
Lines (not exact, I don't have the book with me
"He can do all that and use a thimble?"
"How does a Karthani know his wife has her monthly flow? He goes to his son's bed and finds his cock already wet."
"You're my new favorite tailor."
Things we learned
Order of events five years ago: Chains died, Sabetha left, Bug never met either of them. I said on Tumblr that I thought it was six years ago, but I get it now. It's like how my birthday's in November, so subtracting the year I was born from the current year doesn't give you my age unless you do it in December.
She has brown eyes (but I'm sticking with the Bridget Regan fancast)
No more secret peace in Camorr
Emberlain has declared independence
Venaportha is the Lady of Two Faces and Preva is a love goddess
Locke's identity
I'm reserving judgement on this until we find out where Lynch is going with it. There's no way of knowing how much of what Patience said was true, although I'm inclined to think it is. Wasn't really expecting a prophecy in this canon. Considering that he sort of already lost a child in Bug.
I also read Steven Brust's The Paths of the Dead. Cool to see young Morrolan, Teldra and Zerika, enjoyed reading about the main four again. Looked for Ibronka/Roaana fic and there was none. Might write it myself once I'm done with the series.
