Notes on a third read of The Lies of Locke Lamora

Spoilers for both it and its sequel, a bit of speculation on the third, and some close reads on the Barsavi siblings for fic purposes.

- "This [table] used to be the property of Marius Cordo. . ." There's some Rowling level foreshadowing. Speaking of which, Wraithstone is the same as the dementor's kiss.

- Little Nazca says Father; Barsavi says Daddy when quoting her. Adult Nazca says Papa' Anjais says Father to Barsavi and Papa to Locke. Pachero has no dialogue.

- The end of "Jean Tannen" is the best thing ever. Boys!

- Okay, let's look at Little Tesso, since he's friends with Pachero (but not Anjais, which is perhaps notable). He wears a ribbon in his hair - a bit vain? Or he's just practical. Like Violet Baudelaire! Although short hair is more practical than long hair. He doesn't give up. He has girls in his gang. He says they're even. He underestimates Jean, but he's supposed to, that's kind of Jean's point. He bites, as Locke does to the Gray King. He doesn't hide his reaction when he sees Jean at the end. Competent, but not likable.

- How adorable is it that the Salvaras dress in the same color? And why is it not Yuletide yet? I want spy training for married dorks. Also, I forgot Lorenzo wore glasses. That's one of my favorite trivial things about the books, all the awesome glasses-wearers.

- So this year is 560, which means RSURS takes place in 562. Barsavi took over 22 years ago, that's 538. And from what Chains says in "The Last Mistake," you can figure out that Locke joins the Gentlemen Bastards in 543.

- Page 151: They conned Dona de Marre four years ago (556)
- Page 212: Bug joined them four years ago
- Page 235: Chains died four years ago
- Page 341: Sabetha left four years ago (BUT WHY?)
Bug wishes he could have met Chains. He never says if he met Sabetha. That leaves three possible sequences of events, with the most likely sounding one being that she ran off after Chains died and Locke became garrista, and Bug replaced her, possibly because they needed another person for the de Marre game.

- I wonder how they know Sabetha's in Parlay. Did she tell them where she was going? Did she debate over leaving them, or did she get angry and leave on an impulse? Did she leave to pursue theater, or did she take up theater just because she needed a living? Assuming I'm not totally off base in thinking she's an actress.

- I thought Tesso and Nazca were killed on consecutive nights, but it looks like there's a night in between. So I need to make a few adjustments to the fic, and the extra day is good if I ever write any extremely AU sequels.

- Anjais sounds like a nice guy, even if he doesn't listen to Nazca. The word sympathy is repeated. He uses quite a few imperative sentences - he's so accustomed to giving orders that he does it unconsciously. He does keep his word. He touches Locke, and he says "end of discussion" because he's a person who can say that and have the discussion end. He slams the door.

- I forget how little we actually see of the Berangias sisters. (Why give a surname ending in S to a pair of twins?) They don't have dialogue with their brother (except in memory) or any of the Barsavis.

- Rainshine is awesome. Seriously, how often do you see that in books?

- There's a few amusing references to how the Bastards don't know anything about boats.

- "I would rather be dead myself than lose you." Oh, that's nicely done, referencing the end of the second with the end of the first.

Now I really need to update [community profile] historicalyafen, and then I have some homework. When that's finished I might start A Game of Thrones.

Edit: "Whatever eye trouble the old Madam Barsavi had borne had been passed to all three of her surviving children." That suggests one or more that didn't survive. Might have to add that to the head canon.
